CERAMICS MASTERS’ WORKSHOPS!

We are pleased to announce that we are now beginning to hold masters’ workshops at our studio on Granville Island. Our intention is to offer intensive hands-on instruction, focusing on building skill sets with concrete objectives. They are designed to move students through a rapid progression of understanding in the medium. No previous experience is necessary for introductory courses, but students with experience are welcome. For more advanced courses, we ask that students take the introductory courses first or demonstrate their level of experience. The courses will be offered once per week and in four-week segments (although this may vary from one course to another).
Our first courses will begin Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012. Each class will be from 7pm to 10pm once per week on its given day. See calendar below for more details. Space is limited (4 to 5 per class) and classes are filling up fast, so contact us right away to secure your spot.

MEDALTA //// MEDICINE HAT, ALBERTA
Our residency at Medalta in “the Hat” was fruitful! The work that emerged from our group was a direct response to the dramatic landscape and history of the place. It also had a strong image focus, since most of us had backgrounds in print-making. Below are a couple examples of how we were using the imagery around us. The first is an old Hycroft platter reject that Jasna transformed into an homage to the landscape. The second is a wall-hanging sculpture by Noel that has a hidden grainery scene on its interior. The door image was made from an actual discarded door in a nearby vacant lot.

One of the main techniques we were employing was a tissue paper transfer. First screen-printing onto the tissue, we would then sponge it onto the surface of the object, which allowed us to transfer onto 3-D objects. (see below) Afterwards, Jasna stenciled the cowboy image on over the transferred dots.

STUMP STOOLS

There is a common misconception that porcelain is fragile. On the contrary, it is one of the harder ceramic materials and works great as furniture! These stump stools are designed to be the extra seat at the coffee table or around the fireplace. Our favorite place to see them is in the garden. They are currently for sale in our shop!

SUMMER FOR TEENS PROGRAM

We taught the inaugural year of the ceramics program for the Summer for Teens program at Emily Carr this July and it was awesome! This is an amazing and intensive program designed for teens that are interested in pursuing an art career. Here are their awesome final projects:

FINDERS KEEPERS
Year: 2011
Materials: Ceramic hearts and magnets.
Over 200 hand made ceramic hearts were dispersed across Granville Island in Vancouver, for passersby to pick them up.
Those that found them, kept them or gave them to the love ones.
Each tag had my web address and many of the finders left comments and sent photos.
The project launched on Thursday February 11th and by the end of the weekend all of the tags were gone–even those that were high up or well hidden.

HOME PROJECT
Year: 2011/Ongoing
Materials: Magnetic Ceramic Tags
Over the summer and across continents we’ve been tagging with magnetic letters. For us it was a reflection on the meaning of home, with Noel’s Canadian permanent residence having been granted earlier this summer and our roots growing deeper. We placed them along our familiar pathways, choosing meaningful spots to us. Given the ephemeral nature of graffiti (extremely so in Vancouver), we wanted to beautify the city with a gesture that would have a second life as a gift for those who discover that they can be easily removed. Our intern Henriikka Leppänen played a big part, adding several great Helsinki tags to our collection.

These pigeons were our first collaboration together, just after we met in Denmark–inspired by the soothing sounds of the pigeons on the roof in the morning.

PUBLIC WORKS
We are always looking for new ways to get our ideas out into the world. Other than our more clandestine exploits (see below), we are often looking for public art calls and interior design opportunities.

PARK BENCH PROPOSAL

Year: 2010
Materials: Cast-concrete form, hand-glazed ceramic tile
This is a mock-up pattern of blueberries that we created to illustrate the idea of wrapping the blown-up wallpaper image around a 3D object. Our intention was for the bench to be a bright contrast to its environment, while still maintaining a conceptual relevance to the site. This was made with the intention of using standard 6 inch tiles that would have been painted, stenciled, and silk-screened by hand closely following the pattern.

PUBLIC SQUARE SCULPTURE PROPOSAL
Year: 2011
Materials: Reclaimed wood, steel
This was a proposed idea for six oversized colorful birdhouses standing at various heights. Each house is a duplex—intended for two different species to live in them, governed by variations in hole diameters. A viewing platform for visitors brings them adjacent and closer to the height of the houses. However, the viewer on the platform would appear to be on a stage addressing a crowd (the birdhouse figures) to another onlooker of the scene.
